A History of Violence

Tom Breihan of the AV Club lists the most important action movie of every year from the emergence of its current archetype in 1968 (Bullitt) to 2017 (Wolf Warrior 2).
Addendums not reflected in the below list: The French Connection is also extensively covered in 1971, while 1981 also covers Escape From New York and The Road Warrior. 300 was to be the 2006 entry, but was shifted to 2007, bumping Elite Squad. In 2018, he updated the list to add Mandy as that year's entry, in 2019 he added John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum, in 2020 he added Extraction, and in 2021 he added F9: The Fast Saga. Unfortunately this list cannot be updated to reflect those post-2017 changes.
