James Arness on the Big Screen

This list is James Arness before he played what's-his-name on that show... you know the one... ran a few years. =)
Arness appeared in at least 4 films with John Wayne before Gunsmoke. John Wayne did an introduction to the series.
Arness was billed in some of his early roles as "James Aurness", his real name. He is billed as "uncredited" in others =)
It's fun to find the older films and look for "before they were stars" appearances and try to see just what they did that got them the attention they needed to become "stars". For Arness, being on the tall side probably helped. I have always wondered if "The Sea Chase" was the reason that Arness and Claude Akins worked together so often. Akins was in 11 Gunsmoke episodes. IMDB has interesting information and there are websites dealing with Arness and his career. a good man and missed ! I cheated on the last 3 .. they are not "before" and he also appeared as Matt Dillon in Bob Hope's "Alias Jesse James."
