John's Non-English Language Films

Films made in a language other than English, presented in order of release year. Although it wasn't strictly adhered to, the general guideline for inclusion or exclusion is whether it would qualify for an Academy Award Best Foreign Language Film nomination. Some of these after the late-1940's were nominees. Quite a few are also on Roger Ebert's Great Movies list. Some may have English dubbed versions (Japanese anime are a good example), but the primary language in which they were made was not English. Most only have English subtitles. Films produced in English in foreign countries or by foreign directors are excluded. Some, such as Solaris, The Vanishing, Insomnia, Let the Right One In, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo have Hollywood remakes. These are the foreign language originals, and they're usually better, but never worse. Pay attention to release years as common titles have been used on several films. Haven't seen them all, but working on it!
