Best Director Oscar Winners 1928 to 2021 - Page 3

All of the winners of the best director Oscar since the inception of the award. While the Academy is noted for its many omissions and oversights (often corrected years later with honorary Oscars), several are most striking and most surprising: Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Howard Hawks, Ingemar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa, Federico Fellini, and Ridley Scott have never won Oscars in the competitive categories. Also, it should be noted that in 1927 2 directing Oscar's were given out - one to Frank Borzage for best director (7th Heaven) and one to Lewis Milestone for best direction of a comedy.( Two Arabian Nights). That was the only time there were two directing awards.
