Owing it to its location in the northern Great Plains, the state of North Dakota is home to a fascinating diversity of birds throughout the year. Western species more typical of the Rocky Mountains creep through in the badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park area, while forests along the Red River host many birds typical of eastern woodlands; the grasslands themselves have their own sought-after specialties like Chestnut-collared Longspur and Baird's Sparrow. During the wintertime, boreal species like Snowy Owls come down into the state from Canada.
