Video Art, as defined by Rate Your Music, is "At its purest form, video art encompasses films which are made to be a piece of non-cinematic art. This style of film-making became more prevalent in the mid-to-late 1960s as the development of analog video tape increased. Video art can essentially be any form of non-cinematic material, utilising the audiovisual mediums to create an art piece, as opposed to creating a film. These pieces were sometimes not even released theatrically, or on mainstream home media, but were created purely for use in gallery and installation shows.
Whilst other Experimental forms of cinema often have unique characteristics, video art shares no common themes, narrative, or overall style. In fact, video art is almost always lacking in a theme, narrative, plot, style, direction, and often is shot without actors or subjects. Some of these elements can be seen to overlap with similar methods used in Surrealism and Abstract Film."
