West Virginia's Special Birds

At first glance, West Virginia appears to be monotonous (but beautiful) Appalachian Mountain territory, but this doesn't mean the state is without diversity or excitement in its bird life. Notably, West Virginia has more nesting species of the colorful wood-warblers (29 species) than any other state, including sought-after species like the Cerulean and Swainson's Warblers. The western border of the state follows the Ohio River, which provides habitat for waterbirds that can be hard to find elsewhere in West Virginia. Further north, the country's southernmost tamarack forest and a peat bog can be seen at Cranesville Swamp near the Maryland state line, and therein birds more typical of New England and Canada.
