This list was put together in 1978 by a jury consisting of literary critics and authors and published in the German magazine "Die Zeit". The list does not include drama or poetry (hence the absence of Shakespeare). Since it is assembled by German "littérateurs", it might be a good starting point for people interested in German literature, because the German books chosen are probably less well known outside of the German-speaking countries (some are even little-known in Germany, believe me).
