After having spent over 10 years in the discipline of Film Studies, I have seen oh so many critics'/reviewers'/general film buffs' lists of "the top movies of all-time". And they're all different. But some movies just keep popping up over and over again. So, here they are, an essential list of must-see movies for anyone who is choosing film as their career path, or for anyone who wants to be a true cinema aficionado. It runs chronologically, from 1902 to 2013.

**Also, be warned that important film series are included as one entry in the list - example: The Godfather Trilogy takes up one spot out of the 1001, but on here is represented as three separate entries, one for each film.
***Since this list was composed in 2011, I have added 15 extra spots for films from 2012 and 2013, bringing the list over 1001.
