Throughout his career, Terence Steven "Steve" McQueen was known as "The King of Cool." "His early life toughened him up a lot. He had an abusive stepfather who beat him, he ran away and lived on the streets. He later joined the circus, and then the merchant marines, and then worked in a brothel, as a roughneck on an oil rig, and a lumberjack. That was all before the age of seventeen. At that age, he joined the US Marine Corps" (Robert Frost, "10 Greatest Films of Steve McQueen"). The Oscar-nominated performer helped define the meaning of "cool" in just a handful of movies before his untimely death in 1980 at the age of 50. One of my Dad's favourite actors.
