20 Superior Gothics

From the introduction to "Gothic Novels of the Twentieth Century: An Annotated Bibliography" (1979), by Elsa J. Radcliffe. She divides gothic novels into five general categories, and offers a few suggestions of superior works in each.
1-4: Historical Gothic ("those which are essentially historical novels but which also include such Gothic elements as mystery, suspense and the supernatural").
5-8: Sentimental Gothic ("distinguished by its emphasis on the love fantasy element").
9-12: Horror Gothic ("the emphasis here is on the supernatural, the occult and the ghastly").
13-15: Exotic Gothic ("represented by tales of the 'Dark Continent' or the 'mysterious East' ").
16-20: Whimsical Gothic ("a small but delicious group of tales using Gothic themes in either cynical or playful ways which can be thoroughly enchanting").
