The United States is a land of immigrants, so many dishes that are universally recognized as iconic to America borrow heavily from other cultures. That is true of meat dishes, which Americans probably eat more than any other culture. These dishes originated in the United States, which in some cases may surprise you. Swiss Steak has to do with the preparation method, not the country, and both Spaghetti & Meatballs and Chicken Parmigiana are Italian-American adaptations. Chop Suey and Beef & Broccoli, two staple items on Chinese Restaurant menus, are both dishes invented in the US to cater to the Western palate, and utilize readily available ingredients. America is also home to barbecue (a noun, not a verb), and there are several regional variations, which are similar yet distinctive. Several originate in the South, but barbecue isn't the only contribution the South makes to American Meat dishes. And there is the occasional misnomer; City Chicken is, of course, a pork dish.
