Comedy is one of several main genres of film, and the films are one of the earliest genres to appear on the medium of film. Comedic films rely on a primary emphasis on humour and/or Satire, and attempt to entertain viewers using elements of such.
The earliest, silent comedic films were mostly Slapstick - as it required no sound in order to show the humorous nature of the situations taking place. As film moved through to the 1930s farcical scenes became more commonplace, and a heavier emphasis on exaggeration and improbability was implemented. These types of films are generally referred to as Screwball Comedy movies.
