Watched my first film from the republic of Georgia. Also films from China, Denmark, France (5), Germany, Hong Kong (3), Italy (4), Japan (6), Mexico, Poland, Sweden. Eleven silent films. Four films selected to the National Film Registry. The first film by Asta Nielsen, silent film actress widely credited with changing the acting style in films from theatrical to a more natural approach. The last remaining Buster Keaton silent I had not yet seen (not counting the lost Fatty Arbuckle short, A Country Hero).
This month's recommendations: Animal Kingdom; Ashes of Time; East Side Sushi; Festival Express; The Lower Depths; Sanshiro Sugata; Songs from the Second Floor; Taken (much better than I expected); and In the Year of the Pig, with the caveat that it contains gruesome imagery, so be cautious.
