This instalment highlights the works of well-known 19th century American authors (Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Nathaniel Hawthorne & Ralph Waldo Emerson) plus several lesser known writers such as Margaret Fuller, Francis Parkman and John C. Frémont.
These are books, most of which were published in the mid-19th century, that are discussed in Chapter 5 of "From Puritanism to Postmodernism: A History of American Literature". Chapter 5 is within the section "From Colonial Outpost to Cultural Province".
This is the 7th instalment of a maximum of eleven. The instalments are being published in more or less reverse chronological order.
