This presents an alphabetical listing of the "best" American novels, from A to Z, with one additional work for numerals, a total of 27 entries.
These are novels (or novellas) only. No short stories, stage plays, book series, or poems. I taught American Lit and thus the focus.
Listing is by the first word in the title, BUT (and of course) for alphabetization purposes, articles ("a," "an" and "the") do not count. This is basic according to any style sheet.
I put the numerical entry last. Typically, that should come first. Yet, I figured, American Literature should begin with Mark Twain!
I selected no author more than once, a self-imposed rule. Some letters had so many fine candidates it was difficult to pick. For others, I had to scratch around.
Let me know what you think.
