Having seen a list about food eaten if you grew up poor, I have compiled a list of the largest majority of foods that I ate as a British child who grew up poor..
My Mom was widowed with 3 children under 8, a mortgage and a low income. In order to make ends meet we has to eat economically.
The first page of this list is the main foods we ate, day in, day out. The second page contains foods we ate if more money was available.
We had a plum tree, gooseberries, blackcurrants, rhubarb, herbs and a few vegetables in the garden which helped. Oh, and a cupboard full of plum jam every year.
Unfortunately, Mom can't cook - she could burn water and pans catching fire! If you turned your bowl of porridge upside down, the porridge stayed in the bowl.
However, I am not complaining, I learnt how not to cook from Mom, how to put out fires and how to use cookbooks to learn about food and cooking.
BTW, I started learning about food and cooking when I was 3 so we did not starve, or burn the house down!?!
