Everyone has one book in them. If it's good enough, it will guarantee you immortality and you won't have to bother writing another one ever again. Some writers represented on this list went on to brilliant careers (Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut, Thomas Pynchon), some struggled to live up to their early promise (Joseph Heller), some never bothered to publish a second novel during their lifetimes (Harper Lee, Ralph Ellison).
