Best Films Each Year: 1930-2000

These are the best films I've seen in each year in the years I'm most confident saying so. In years prior and after, I was having difficulty either deciding or finding something I'd seen that was good enough. None of these won the Academy Award for Best Picture, although a few were nominated. In the years I've seen the Best Picture winner, I would say with confidence that my selection is better. Large numbers of them are in The Criterion Collection and most have had significant critical acclaim. Many are not American, and some are obscure.
