The Daily Yearbook of Motion Pictures 1924, p. 351 (cited in Richard Koszarski's an Evenng's Entertainment, pp. 28-29) ran the largest yet national poll of high school students conducted by the Russell Sage Foundation, National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, and Associated Motion Picture Distributors of 37,000 high school students in 76 cities across the United States. 1 was the overwhelming winner for both boys and girls (4,505 votes total), especially in the central, eastern, and western states. New England boys and girls and Southern girls preferred 2, while 5 was most popular with Southern boys (1,646, + 784 girls). Douglas Fairbanks was the most popular actor with the boys, Rudolph Valentino with the girls. Wallace Reid came in #2 for both. 2 and 3 were more popular with girls, and 5, 6, and 10 were the only ones voted for by more boys than girls. 12 sank into double digits with boys (78), the only such film on the list. D.W. Griffith films take up a third of the list.
