Cinephile 101: Cinema of Japan - Page 3

Cinephile 101 is a cinephile/film buff list series, aiming to cover a diverse range of different areas that anyone who claims this distinction should really know their stuff in.
In this entry of the series we're looking at the cinema of Japan. Japanese cinema is a real big deal in international film and the chances are that you've seen a Japanese film without even realising it, as is often the case with dubbed anime or seen a film that was remade (if not even ripped off of) from a Japanese film. So from anime to Samurai movies via the Japanese New Wave movement and onto Kaidan and J-Horror, here's a selection of essential Japanese movies that all cinephile's need to know.
For the sake of including the widest selection possible, any film series are represented solely by their first movie.
