UNESCO has a list of "Cities of Gastronomy". To be approved as a City of Gastronomy, cities need to meet a number of criteria. Nurturing of public appreciation, well-developed gastronomy with a vibrant community, gastronomic festivals and contests with awards, indigenous ingredients used in traditional cooking, local know-how and more.
Some of the things that got the place on the list include: white truffles, mapo tofu, dandan noodles, coffee industry, fish industry, pancit molo, kinilaw, chicken inasal, preserving Maya gastronomy, cachaça, paçoca, feta, olive oil, miso paste, arak, sake, tex-mex cuisine, abalone, food festivals, food production sustainability and many more.
