Daniel Manus Pinkwater is one of the funniest and best children's/YA writer going. He is always expanding the realm of Children's picture books and also YA novels. I first read Lizard Music in the 70's and it has stayed with me forever. He wrote many picture books and also novels. Finding his books is a challenge but I recommend reading him to see the ideas that he has that are very different from the books being done today. I have tried to find as many books and images that I could, however, since some of the pictures are of picture books, you only get part of the book. Also, he sometimes wrote by D. Manus Pinkwater and Manus Pinkwater. Jill is his wife.
