Doc's List of Modern and Contemporary Classic Novels and Story Collections

A personal, idiosyncratic list of 252 modern and contemporary classic novels and short story collections. I could have kept going, but I wanted to keep the list manageable. I define modern as beginning with the Modernist movement in approximately 1900 and running into the 1950s, with post-modernist works running to about 2000 give or take, and contemporary running from approximately 2000 to today. The list is by no means comprehensive nor should it be considered a "greatest hits" compilation. I've tried to be representative, and have included both literary and popular fiction.
