The Best Documentary category was established in 1942, when the twenty-five nominees and four winners also include documentary short films. From 1943 onward, the short films moved to a separate category, and Best Documentary Feature ranged between 2 and 5 nominees until 1964, when 5 nominees were consistently nominated each year thereafter.The year listed for each film is its release date, which didn't always coincide with the year it was nominated.
