Apologies to the fans of the Top Gun movie(s) but this is a list of short books, each of which can be read in a few hours or less. The works are suited to the adventurous, dare I say 'Maverick', reader. Ideal for those wanting to push the envelope, those who are singing "Highway to the Danger Zone" when they choose their next book to read.
Each paired work is typically a short novel, a novella or an individual short story. There is an occasional play, autobiography or philosophical non-fiction work. All the works are less than about 250 pages. At least the first book of each pair features on many lists of short works/novellas.
