A ruff is a terrible thing. I can only imagine how uncomfortable it was--I have no proof of this, but it does look extremely stiff and horrible.
I often wondered if the children had to wear them all day or just for special events or paintings.In the image picture, the women have plucked the hair off their forehead because it was a thing, a really popular thing to do back then.
