Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson AO (born January 3, 1956) is an American actor, director, producer & screenwriter best known for his action hero roles, particularly his breakout role as Max Rockatansky in the first 3 films of the post-apocalyptic action series Mad Max and as Martin Riggs in the buddy cop film series Lethal Weapon. In 1995, Gibson produced, directed & starred in Braveheart, for which he won the Golden Globe for Best Director, the Oscar for Best Director & Best Picture. He later directed & produced the controversial The Passion of the Christ. He received critical notice for his directorial work on Apocalypto (2006), set in 16th century Mesoamerica. After several legal issues & controversial statements Gibson's public image plummeted. His career began a resurgence with Edge of Darkness (2010) & The Beaver (2011).
