Flavorwire's 50 Films That Capture the Dark Side of New York City - Page 2

The Museum of the Moving Image's See It Big! New York in Film series closes on Sunday, September 27. From Taxi Driver to Dog Day Afternoon, the retrospective looks at the gritty and sometimes glamorous side of New York City — "a city of contrasts, energy, diversity, and spectacle." As the landscape of the city continues to shift, with cultural staples like Kim's Video closing and the Disneyfication of Times Square changing the world's view of the city, nostalgia for the gritty, sleazy, crime-ridden New York City of the 1970s and '80s seems to be at an all-time high. With that in mind, we're looking back at the city as it once was in cinema — those films that portray the dark side of New York, with all its users, abusers, corrupt cops, underground worlds, and vigilante heroes.
