The forties was the time of rationing. Many foods were went to those fighting in WWII and had to be replaced by other food items. An example of this was sugar which was replaced by corn syrup and honey. Many cakes had to be made without milk, eggs, and butter and instead were made with brown sugar, baking powder/soda and Crisco.
