French Film Critics Rate Best Westerns (1966)

A compilation by Phil Hardy on p. 382 of The Overlook Film: Encyclopedia: The Western (1995 edition) of films mentioned in 28 film critics' ten best lists in Le Western (1966), based on the number of citations in the list. The first three ranks have a clear consensus; the others are listed alphabetically within each rank. Rank #5 begins with The Left-Handed Gun, 6 with Duel in the Sun, 7 with Colorado Territory, 8 with The Last Frontier, 9 with Billy the Kid, and 10 with Apache. Unsurprisingly, those ranking 10th are the longest list, with more films in the spot than there were lists from which to compile (to accomdate all the films with only one mention). Hardy offers this list for comparison to the more contemporary critics' ten best lists in the 1995 edition.
