When I notice that a movie is a big director's directorial debut, if he is a pure director, I see that the movie has a different taste. It is simple (probably low budget), honest, but hits the hard points, like Following (Nolan), Pi (Arronofsky), Eraserhead (Lynch) . In the other hand, if he or she is a foreknown actor/actress, the movie is more major and epic, like Dances with Wolves (Costner), A Bronx Tale (De Niro), and Ordinary People (Redford)
