History of the American Cinema: An Evening's Entertainment, 1915-1928 by Richard Koszarski - Page 6

Subtitled The Age of the Silent Feature Picture, this is volume 3 of the University of California History of the American Cinema series edited by Charles Harpole. Koszarski notes that Ian Jarvie said that films themselves are not film history but useful entry points to the study of film history. This is a list of the individualized entry points in his book, in the order first mentioned, not counting unproduced films (Backwash, an unproduced Josef von Sternberg-Mary Pickford project, is listed in the index) and newsreel series or the Ham and Bud series, none of which are specifically mentioned. Topics Koszarski covers includes the technology (including the establishment of SMPE, now SMPTE), the corporate structure, the experience of live music and early fandom, censorship (including the formation of the MPPDA (later known as MPAA and MPA), filmmakers, stars, the first Oscars, including establishing that Sunrise was a Best Picture winner of equal standing to Wings, and modern assessment.
