Americans invented rock and roll. The British saved it. That sounds like an oversimplification until you realize that the top single of 1963 was "Sugar Shack" by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs and the top single of 1964 was "I Want to Hold Your Hand." The Brits invented blues rock and heavy metal, and while they didn't create psychedelia, punk or synthpop, it's fair to say they made them all a lot more stylish. The history of British rock and roll has been the history of global popular culture for half a century now. Not bad for a dreary, rain-soaked little island.
