Since I really got into movies about 12 years ago, I've averaged about 350 new titles per year. I make it a point to see as many commercial/critical hit films from around the globe, but I have my taste, so if I enjoy the work of a particular director/actor/cinematographer/etc., you can bet I've tracked their filmography. If you see 3+ titles for anyone, assume the others were omitted (in some cases) in favour of variety, and bumping up lesser-known films. Indeed, this year marks the first time I've struggled to make cuts. But while I try to show due deference to films/genres/cultures/eras that struggle for recognition, this is ultimately a list of favourites. As such, I judge films foremost by their watchability, and only then by all their technical/artistic merits. To make room, I only mention the first film in a series; only rarely do great films not deserve the shame of their descendants. Many have used this list as a guide to great cinema and I hope you will too. Enjoy!
