Largest U.S. Cities (1980)

These were the most populous U.S. cities in 1980, the year of the 20th U.S. Census. In this decade, New York experiences the largest-ever population drop in an American city (approximately 823,000 fewer people than 1970), and Baltimore makes its last appearance in the top 10. Notably, with the first appearance of San Diego and Phoenix in the top 10, this is the first census in which the the Sun Belt holds a majority (5) of the top 10 cities.
