The Depression brought bread lines, soup kitchens, and people begging for food at people's doors. It is said that those who went to the soup kitchen funded by Al Capone, ate better than most. The quality of the soup kitchen was based off of how big was the kitchen was, local support (food donations), and the number of people who needed help. Those better off were encouraged to grow "charity gardens" so that the soup kitchens could provide fresh fruit and vegetables.
