Donatien Alphonse François de Sade was an infamous French libertine aristocrat whom the term "sadism" is derived from. Yep. That's right. The word "sadism" is named after him. He is easily the most famous leading figures of the forgotten libertine movement, especially when it comes to the libertine literature tradition.
He's best known for his heavily banned (for a reason) works 120 Days Of Sodom, Justine, and Juliette.
Marquis de Sade's lore is actually crazy.
He was released 10 DAYS BEFORE THE STORMING OF THE BASTILE where he was imprisoned at. He nearly lost his head by Robespierre but his execution got cancelled last-minute because of Robespierre getting into political suspicion and Robespierre lost his head instead. When Napoleon read Justine and Juliette, he demanded the author of the books to be sent away. Despite writing under a penname, he was tracked down and sent away. YET HE STILL DIED OF OLD AGE.
