Michigan's Special Birds

The Great Lakes State is a fantastic place to look for birds, owing to its location where northern boreal forests meet southern hardwoods, with the lakes themselves providing migration corridors for countless songbirds and waterbirds. However, no bird draws more attention in Michigan than the Kirtland's Warbler, an endangered species with only about 1,800 pairs left, which nests almost exclusively in Jack Pine stands in the lower peninsula ("the mitten"), and can be seen on tours based out of the towns of Mio and Grayling. Those birders who make the trek to see the warbler would do well to seek out Michigan's other fine birds during their visit.
