This is taken from @dionrevel's "Modern Civilization Essentials" list on Letterboxd (as linked on Tumblr). I have ONLY included the movies on their original "basics" list and haven't included any sequels or extended franchises (ex Back to the Future 2, or any of the other Star Wars movies) that weren't on the list.

"Not all these movies are necessarily good, but the ones that gave me small pop culture epiphanies. It made me realize that 30%-40% of the jokes from modern sitcoms are references/parodies- and these movies are their source material.
^^ This is also true for socializing. So many people I thought were naturally funny were just doing movie bits."
EDIT: accidentally included "Harry Potter Complete 8 Movies" instead of just the first one, please count as only the first movie in the series
