This is a list of the most powerful or prosperous cities in the world. "Prosperity" is here roughly defined as the GDP under the control of the city. "Power" is more nebulous - it can refer either to major axes of political power (e.g. Washington D.C., Beijing, Moscow - or even otherwise relatively small cities like Ottawa or Canberra), or cities that were relatively politically important in history (e.g. Bonn being the capital of Western Germany or Athens' overwhelming historical important), or to the soft power exerted by cities (e.g. Geneva acting as an important hub for U.N. offices).
