Nobody's Perfect: Joe E. Brown Filmography

Joe E. Brown happily claimed he was the only kid who ran away from home to join the circus with the blessing of his parents. Ten-year-old Brown joined a tumbling act called the Five Marvellous Ashtons. In 1920 he debuted on Broadway in "Jim Jam Jems". He signed with Warner Brothers in 1929 to do film adaptations of Broadway shows. Known for his loud yell, infectious grin and cavernous mouth, many of his films revolved around his athletic ability. As he briefly played semi-pro baseball, his biggest hits involved the game, Elmer, the Great (1933) and Alibi Ike (1935). Joe was a top ten moneymaking star for 1933 and 1936. His peers regarded him as one of the few truly nice people in Hollywood. In the 1950s, he was discovered by a new generation as millionaire Osgood Fielding III in Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot (1959), uttering the immortal last line, "Well, nobody's perfect."
