The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has had 47 different Governors and a total of 49 Governors. Robert E. Pattison and Gifford Pinchot were each Governor on two seperate occasions both interupted by another Governor. It is also worth noting that the office of Governor was vacant from July 9 - July 26, 1848. The 10th Governor Francis R Shunk resigned on July 9, 1848 and died July 20, just 11 days after resigning. At the time there was no Office of Lieutenant Governor, so succession went to the President of the Senate William F. Johnston. Johnston took office on July 26, 1848. Johnston was unreachable for 17 days, thus explaining the lapse. Remarkably it wasn't until 1873 that the office of Lietenant Governor would be created. It would be another three years before the first Lt Governor would be elected.
