Photoplay Award Winning Movies

The Photoplay Award was a national US film prize that was awarded annually from 1921 to 1940 and 1945 to 1969. This makes it the first film award in the world, even before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) Oscar, which was established in 1929. However, the award lost its reputation early on due to competition from the Academy Awards and the increasing importance of critics' awards such as those of the National Board of Review or the New York Film Critics Circle.
The founder of the Photoplay Award was the film magazine Photoplay, founded in Chicago in 1911. The winners were determined by the magazine's readers or, from 1944 to 1952, by an opinion poll conducted by Audience Research Inc. and were later honored at a ceremony in Los Angeles.
