Republic of Images: A History of French Filmmaking by Alan Williams - Page 5

Alan Larson Wlliams's 1992 history of French cinema was published by Harvard University Press. The first part deals with France ruling the silent cinema, particularly with its two major production companies, Pathé and Gaumont, which continue to this day. The second part covers the Golden Age of Silent Film. The third covers The Golden Age of Sound Cinema. The fourth covers how cinema changed (or didn't) during World War II and the occupation and after, including the development of "Tradition of Quality" by a German studio (C.O.I.C.) and its earliest challengers. The fifth and final part covers the French New Wave, the movement of French critics who derided the "Tradition" as "le cinéma de papa" and made their own films that challenged the mainstream, and how films changed in the commercialized, post-Nouvelle Vague period of the 1970s and 1980s. Films are largely addressed in chronological order, often clustered by filmmaker or topic. This is a list of all films mentioned in the book.
