Screenrant's 10 Best Swashbuckler Movies of All Time

"Swashbuckler movies might not be hugely popular in today's cinematic climate, but they started out as classic Hollywood epics, with some of the most successful directors of the '40s and '50s using the genre as a way to make their stories more exciting and adventurous for general audiences. They often did this by blending some genuinely emotional storytelling with enough sword fights to keep the viewer entertained. After losing their popularity for a while, swashbuckler movies saw a huge comeback in the late '90s when great adventure movies again took the world by storm. Thanks to the increased budgets that movie studios were offering to their directors, these movies quickly got more and more intense, giving filmmakers plenty of opportunities and ideas to make these stories exciting again. As the prominence of special effects and blockbuster cinema grew in the 2000s, swashbucklers were among the first genres to join this new wave." - screenrant.com
