Amsterdam, Venice, Barcelona. Stonehenge, Terracotta Warriors, Louvre. Wonderful places all, and all groaning under the crush of visitors that flood to see them each year. Here's a list of alternative destinations, all full of interest, charm, history, character all their own. None hard to get to, not many "had the place all to ourselves" experiences, but certainly no queuing for hours or peering through crowds. Each one a pleasure to visit - and very often cheaper too.
