South Carolina's Special Birds - Page 3

The Palmetto State has some fantastic birding despite its small size. Subtropical birds like Wood Stork and Painted Bunting can be found along the coast, while pinewoods specialties unique to the American South like the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker and Brown-headed Nuthatch can be found further inland. At the state's western tip, Appalachian highlands can be found, which have birds like Ruffed Grouse and Common Raven typical of colder areas further north. The state bird, of course, is the appropriately named Carolina Wren.
