Beauty and the Beast — Love Between the Virtuous and Vicious in Literature

The tale is almost as old as time — the beautiful, virtuous youth is imprisioned with a "creature" (human or otherwise) of sin and villainy only for the youth to "save" the creature and fall in love in the process. While it's a touching story, it rarely plays out as well in real life.
From Cupid & Psyche and Beauty and the Beast to the earnestness of Richardson's Pamela and the subtle irony of Brontë's Jane Eyre, this tale is old, but it's not going away anytime soon.
