The Jam, if you're among the 99.7% of the American public that's neither heard of nor heard them, was one of the three great late-70's Britpunk bands, along with the Police and the Clash, who expanded the sonic and thematic horizons of punk, incorporating elements of R&B, funk and even jazz to their sound, and writing lyrics of almost literary complexity and detail. The Jam pretty much doomed itself to cult status in the US by plastering all their promotional material with Union Jacks, and never swerving from lead singer and songwriter Paul Weller's socialist ideals.
